Point Omega - Analog Flanger
Point Omega Analog Flanger
I love purple and I love flangers, and while I love most of the things about that famous purple flanger, the Boss BF-2, there are also things about it that I’ve always hated. I’ve played both stock and modded BF-2s and while my initial reaction is always “yes, this is the flanger sound I love!” or “this is great, why did I sell the last one?” inevitably the fixed tonal shift and volume boost drive me nuts and lead me back to searching for something else. My goal in creating Point Omega was to create the BF-2 I’ve always wanted and to end that vicious cycle.
To start with, Point Omega adds the same Low and High EQ controls as the Charming Voices Analog Chorus. This means you’re not locked into the fixed tonal shift of the BF-2. Now you have the freedom to shape your EQ, meaning you can better match your bypass tone or set a brighter or darker effected tone. The Low and High controls adjust both the wet and dry signal. The Volume control allows for either cutting or boosting volume so you don’t have to live with the fixed volume boost of the original. This also allows you to use Point Omega in more creative ways as a colored underdrive or boost. I find these controls key in helping me match Point Omega to other pedals in my rig.
On the modulation side Point Omega retains the same controls as the original with two switches which expand the range of the Manual control and Rate control. The Classic/Deep switch shifts the range of the manual control. Classic matches the original and has all the woosh of the original with the Manual control set high. Deep shifts the range of the Manual control to allow for longer base delay times at the lower extreme of the Manual control. This allows for deeper (and maybe weirder?) pitch modulation sounds. Note that there will be additional noise at lower Manual settings. The Fast/Slow switch shifts the range of the rate control. The Slow setting matches the range of the original and Fast will get the upper reach of the Rate control into super fast ring mod territory.
Point Omega contains all those classic post punk and early alternative flanger tones as well as the ability to really kind of get out there and just have some weird fun. So get out there and have some weird fun!
Manual: Sets the base delay time and center frequency of the filter sweep. Lower settings result in a longer base delay time creating deeper flanging sounds, higher settings will mean a shorter base delay time creating more of the classic “woosh” sound.
Depth: Sets the depth of the LFO which determines the width of the filter sweep
Rate: Sets the speed of the LFO
Regen: Controls the amount of modulated signal cycled back into the circuit. Higher settings will result in a more dramatic filtering effect and create “hollow” or “metallic” tones while lower settings are helpful in finding more chorusy tones. This control will allow for self oscillation at the highest settings.
Low: Cut or boost low end from your signal
High: Cut or boost high end from your signal
Level: Output volume control
Classic/Deep: Sets the range of the manual control. Classic allowing for shorter base delay times and Deep allowing for longer base delay times.
Fast/Slow: Sets the speed range of the rate control
Note: Point Omega has three internal trimpots for calibration. There is nothing to be gained from adjusting these so leave them in their stock positions.
True bypass switching
Power: 9V DC, 2.1 mm center negative barrel. Current draw is <25 mA.
